One of the first things I tell them is to get a copy of the police report from the agency whose officer did the report.
The report will contain important information about the wreck, such as insurance information, specifics about the crash, and, often, some indication of which driver was determined to be at fault by the investigating officer. Usually, it takes a few days for the officer to finish the report and have his or her supervisor approve it prior to making it available to you.
Depending on the agency that responded to the accident, you can obtain a copy of the wreck report by going to the agency in-person, requesting for it to be mailed, or asking for it online.
Bibb County Sheriff – To get a police report for a wreck that was investigated by a Bibb County Sheriff’s Deputy, you can call the Central Records Department at 478-803-2335, or go in-person to the Central Records office at 111 Third Street, Macon, GA. There may be a small fee for the report.
Georgia State Patrol – For accidents investigated by the Georgia State Patrol, you can contact your local Georgia State Patrol Post, or the main Open Records Unit of the Georgia Department of Public Safety. Again, there may be a small fee to obtain the report.
Online Website – Another option for getting car accident reports in Georgia is to use the website buycrash.com. This website collects all wreck reports in Georgia and makes them available for a small fee. You will need some basic information, such as the incident number, which is usually given to you on a card at the accident scene by the investigating officer.
No matter which method you use to obtain the police report, it is helpful to have this with you when you meet with an attorney so they will have some basic idea of how the wreck happened, and the insurance coverages that may apply.
