Any car accident, even a minor one, can cause injury. Some people realize immediately after an auto accident that they’ve been injured. Others walk away thinking they’ve avoided injury, only to realize hours or even days later that they are experiencing pain and are not okay.

Sometimes, because of the rush of adrenaline we experience as a result of the accident, our pain is masked, and we don’t feel the pain until we have returned to a normal calm. If you’ve been in an accident, it’s important to consider seeing a doctor, even if you think you don’t have any injuries. A doctor can do a general medical exam and check for injuries you may have suffered but not yet realized.

Common Car Accident Injuries

Some of the more common types of car accident injuries that may or may not be realized immediately following an auto accident include:

Whiplash – This is a neck strain. It occurs when the head jerks suddenly and unexpectedly back and forth. Much like what happens when you crack a whip. It is most often experienced from a rear-end auto collision. It doesn’t take a fast-moving car to jerk your neck in such a way as to cause whiplash.

Soft Tissue Damage – Soft tissue is connective and supportive tissue that surrounds bones, organs and other structures in the body. It includes such things as muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Car accidents can cause these tissues to get pulled, sprained or torn. If not treated properly, damage to these tissues can lead to chronic pain that decreases your overall quality of life.

Pain Caused by Car Accident Injuries

If you experience pain in any of the following areas after an auto accident it could be signs of injury:

Back Pain
▪ Back pain may be the symptom of a herniated disc, soft tissue damage, a spinal injury, pinched nerve or a sprain.
▪ Low back pain can result from whiplash, a disc injury, an injury to the facet joints of the low back (located in the spine), or the sacroiliac joint (located in the pelvis).

Neck and Shoulder Pain
▪ Often a symptom of whiplash, a torn rotator cuff, a herniated disc or a soft tissue injury.

Headaches or Dizziness
▪ Could be the sign of a concussion, whiplash, contusion, or traumatic brain injury.

Stomach Pain
▪ Stomach pain could be the result of internal injuries, bleeding or soft-tissue injuries.
